From the Cover
There are special moments when fate aligns the stars to create something truly unique. The
album you hold in your hands, recorded in 1991 and for the first time available in America, is
such a moment. Originally planned as an intrumental album of Brazilian musicians playing
songs from famous Japanese pop singer/songwriter Yumi Matsutoya, DE TARDE, VENDO O MAR
really took shape via a very special and serendipitous meeting. When the "father of samba jazz",
legendary Brazilian bassist Luizão Maia introduced producer Neil Oda to Bebel Gilberto (who Luizão
regarded as Rio's top vocalist), the musical sparks flew! This mix of Bebel's voice, Yumi's songs and
the musicianship of Maia and his band Banzai (who have worked with Antonio Carlos Jobim,
Milton Nascimento, and Gilberto Gil) resulted in a Japanese-Brazilian fusion that speaks for itself.
