This film is dominated by two major scenes framed between an introduction and a conclusion. The tension between the two is clear from the beginning, but the man lets us know that it is at least partially intentional as it gives him some power over her; something that is very important to him. Husband and wife acting team Alexandre Borges and Julia Lemmertz turn this into an a very explicit extended sex scene. He is more dominating. She is more nurturing, but no less passionate. The next day their relative roles remain, but there passion is expressed in terms of a long, verbal combat with no clear winner. He continually reminds us that he thinks he is the smarter, but it is obvious that she is no less clever. If he has the advantage at the end of their fight, it is only because she is more willing to yeild. The dialog is well crafted and poetic, but confusing. One thing that is clear is how they feed off of each other. There are two ways to watch this movie. One is to seek out meaning and parallels in the dialog and sex. Perhaps they represent gender roles revealed at their most intense and uninhibited. Maybe the answer is more political. Another way to watch is to appreciate it simply as a moving painting, with one of the greatest sex scenes of a serious film, followed by a dance of words. — Rick & Laura
