Synopsis
The film is a mixture of melodrama and comedy. It draws a portrait of the moral hypocracy of the middle class and revolves around the family of a widower (Paulo Porto), who swore never to remarry, but who becomes infatuated with a prostitute (Darlene Gloria), which sends his son, his parents, and himself into a delirious crisis of values. Amid the irony of the satire, the film is an emotional story of love.

The sexy and clever story of a weathy widower who promises his celebate son he will never sleep with women again, until he becomes obsessed with a prostitute he visits one inebriated night. He tries vainly to hide his relationship with her and to gain the approval of his alienated son. The story takes a couple twists before the surprise ending. The ending offended the military government that was in power in 1973, and they banned the film. It went on to win a Silver Bear at the Festival of Berlin, after which it was allowed to be shown again in Brazil. The sound is a little out of synch at the beginning of the film, giving it a dubbed look, but improves early in the film. Don't let that distract you from this enjoyable classic movie. — Rick & Laura
