A WONDERFUL ELIS REGINA LIVE PERFORMANCE
Two thumbs up! WOW! One of the world's greatest singers, the late Elis Regina, is caught in concert with a hard-driving musical band and a high-spirited singing group, before a wildly enthusiastic audience. This show is from 1980, her last TV appearance, two years before her untimely death at 36. She's clearly having fun on the up-tempo numbers, acting and dancing, while singing. But the ballads are OVERPOWERING in their intensity and the deep emotions that she invests in each one can be seen and felt by the viewer as on "Essa Mulher".

Two of the best performances are the AWESOME Ivan Lins' "Aos Nossos Filhos", which Elis takes to new heights, but it extracts an emotional toll from her, as her artistry barely outlasts the emotions at the end; and then there's the beautiful classic "O Bebado E A Equilibrista". A striking image is Elis, face totally covered in perspiration, with tears running from both eyes, singing a knockout version of Chico Buarque's "Atras Da Porta" (Behind the Door), still humming the final unwritten line. Chico completed the song by doubling the last verse and she appends it at the very end as a bonus.

Elsewhere, Elis and husband/arranger/pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano deliver two emotional 'piano and voice' performances: Tom Jobim's "Modinha" and Gilberto Gil's "Rebento". The 8 singers add a festive flair to the last three songs beginning with an unusual treatment of "Aquarela do Brasil", surging through Milton Nascimento's fabulous "O Que Foi Feito Devera", and ending wonderfully with a soaring "Redescobrir".

This is how we should remember this wonderful Music Legend who left us much too soon. Score another DVD victory for Elis' son and co-executive producer Joao Marcello Boscoli, who also produced her "Elis Regina MBP Especial 1973" DVD, also highly recommended. She truly was "Furacao" - "the Hurricane". My highest recommendation!! Two Thumbs UP, but it deserves Three!!!! — RBSProds
