(2002) Directed by Fábio Barreto and starring Letícia Spiller and Thaigo Lacerda. The story of a cult led by Jacobina that encountered the wrath of the government in Rio Grande do Sul in the 19th Century. This DVD has been out of print for years, but we were very lucky to receive this used copy in excellent condition. Recommended for viewers over 12 years old. Synopsis
Rio Grande do Sul, 1874. Near São Leopoldo, in a mountainous region covered with forest, unravels the story of Jacobina Mentz (Letícia Spiller), a handsome youth of German descent who becomes the leader of a religious sect. Protestant dissidents, Jacobina and his followers become known as the Mucker ("false saint" in German). Jacobina performs cures and preaches the salvation of the soul through happiness and equality. But her sermons do not please the leaders of the local community, who request help from Franz (Thiago Lacerda), cousin of Jacobina (and her old passion). While arousing love and hatred, Jacobina predicts that on Pentecost a there will be a brilliant light in the sky and the world will be consumed by purifying flames. Perplexed by the power and resistence of Jacobina, delegate João Lehn (Caco Ciocler), Father Boeber (Antônio Calloni) and doctor Hillebrandt (Werner Schunemann) appeal to the imperial army. On the day of Pentecost, the prophesy fulfills itself and the Mucker gain the strength to fight for their faith and religious leader, writing the most controversial chapter in the history of the German colonization of Rio Grande do Sul.
