Fernando de Noronha is an island paradise for dolphins and turtles, as
|
Fernando de Noronha
was discovered in 1503 by Amérigo Vespucci, and in the following year the King of
Portugal gave it to Fernando de Loronha, who never once visited the island.
Because of its strategic location, it has been fought over by the Portuguese,
French, and Dutch.
This island paradise is now officially part of
the state of Pernambuco. Much of it is a protected national park, and only
a limited number of tourists may visit the island at any particular time.
Visitors come here for scuba diving, surfing, to see the dolphins and
sea turtles, or just to relax.
Despite its natural beauty, it is far from being touristy.
There is one small hotel and a handful of restaurants.
Most of the residents are fishermen or in the military.
