Gilberto Gil was one of the founders of the Tropicalia movement
in the 1960s.
He gained popularity with his first album in 1967, but not long after
he and Caetano Veloso were exiled from Brazil by the controlling military regime.
They returned to Brazil in 1972, and are still producing new music.
Gilberto has also been busy as a political and environmental activist.
He was a councilman in Salvador, the city of his birthplace,
and was recently named as Brazil's Minister of Culture by the newly
elected President Lula.
Gilberto Gil will be receiving the well deserved recognition as Man of the Year
at the upcoming Latin Grammy awards ceremony.
