Lambada evolved from a style of dance from the called carimbó that was danced in the northeast of Brazil since colonial times. It later picked up some influence of merengue, and also picked up the name Lambada, or "lash of the whip". In the late 1980s, some French businessmen visiting Brazil bought the rights to some Lambada songs. Back in France they created the band Kaoma who turned the sound into an international hit.
