Gold was discovered in 1695 and the gold rush that followed started the first major settlement in Brazil's interior. It's influence is reflected its name, Minas Gerais (general mines), and in the names of cities like Ouro Preto (black gold). A resident of this state is called a mineiro. The reggae band Skank is from the capital city Belo Horizonte.
