Brazilian music has always had an original and modern sound that fuses traditional music with jazz and pop.
The Portuguese colonized this land already populated with indigenous people and then
imported so many slaves to work the sugar cane fields that there were more
residents of African descent than there were colonists. The emancipation
of the slaves was followed by an influx of European immigrant laborers.
All these cultures collaborated to form myriad genres of Brazilian music.
Afro-Brazilian rhythms fused with Portuguese harmonies forming the basis of samba,
and the Italian accordian became the instrument of choice in the forró of the nordestinos.
Samba spawned bossa nova, and later the danceable axé.
Bossa nova continued the trend of mixing with American jazz, but collided
head on with British rock leading eventually to Musica Popular Brasileira,
the popular music of Brazil which distinguishes itself from rock or pop through
its roots in home-grown Brazilian sounds,
while the latter has more in common with its sibling British and American rockers.
Each new musical form spawned the next without ever stepping aside, so that even
today samba, jazz, bossa nova, MPB, rock, and axé are all going strong.

"The Portuguese are very nostalgic and melancholic people, so they brought this kind
of sadness to Brazilian music. But mixed up with African music it becomes a very
sensuous and happy sadness."
