Os Mutantes was formed in the late Sixties by Arnaldo Baptista, Sergio Dias, and Rita Lee. They were heavily influenced by British rock bands like the Beatles, and were the first to introduce the psychedelic rock sound to Brazil. The infusion of electric instruments into the existing pop scene while Bossa Nova was still king triggered a new genre — Tropicalismo — which was short lived, but evolved into Música Popular Brasileira. Thus, Os Mutantes may have been the first rock band in Brazil, and simultaneously the first MPB band as well.
